A little more top speed

Postby 904performance » Thu Jun 30, 2016 8:00 pm

So i have a 1989 Honda elite e that i stuffed a 2007 um 170cc motor into. Rite now it has a top speed of 64mph with the stock trans and stock cdi. I really dont want to take away from the reliabilty of it so trying to stay away from a limitless cdi. Anyone have any experience with a um 170? Looks king of like a gy6 long with a bored head and oul cooler to me but im green to the scooter game. Any knowledge will be appreciate. Thanks!

I would not recommend going faster than 64 on that.

That little Elite looks awesome!

I would certainly perform other work to the bike before taking it much faster, because wireburn is right. That front end is very likely to get squirrley quick at higher speeds. One thing you can do (If you are so inclined) is find an old Kymco ZX50 and rob the entire front end off of it for your Elite. My friend Daniel has done some mating of parts between the ZX and Elite, and they're very close to the same fit if I remember correctly. I believe he had to cut out parts of the glove box to make everything fit though. I will have to ask him to be 100% sure if the ZX stem mounted to the Elite frame, or if it was some other trickery that made it happen...

For more speed, I really really like the Malossi variator for the GY6. Everybody is always talking about NCY, Hoca, or some other Taiwan/China/Whatever kit - but the Malossi is the best one I have ever used on a GY6 engine - better than the Dr. Pulley too! I'll see if I can find you a part number later. Another thing you can do for better speed, is select taller gears. There are a bunch of these out there, but it's hard to make a good decision on where to go with gearing without first knowing what you already have in your scooter. Is it within the realm of possibility to take your gearbox apart and count teeth on the secondary gearset? You don't want to make too big of a jump on gearing without other supporting engine modifications because your engine may be too weak to use them... With 170ish CC though, you'll probably be okay with a wide range of gears.

I believe some people are able to handle more speed than others. It's not just the best scooter to go for more speed.
