Choosing a first scooter between two (2009 Piaggio Fly 125 and 2008 Kymco Super 8 125)

Postby jesser2 » Tue Jun 14, 2016 9:06 am

Hi All, as the title states, I'm looking at buying a first scooter, either a 2009 Piaggio Fly 125 or a 2008 Kymco Super 8 125. I'm mainly looking for something that'll be safe, get some sort of decent resale price (not that I have anything against scooters, but I'd be looking to get into a car as soon as I'm able), have enough storage space and will wear slowly.

The 2009 Piaggio Fly 125 is a third hand scooter. It's sitting at 8,900 k's. It's had a battery change earlier this year and was had its last service three months ago. The seller is asking $1700 for it. It's in registration until December this year. However, it's a third-hand bike. Seems like it was owned for a short time as a first scooter for a younger fellow, where it's got some scratches along the front and both front sides (dropping the bike either side a bit I imagine). They're not massive scratches but they are clearly visible. It does seem to have a decent storage capacity though, having a top box on the back, the regular under the seat and a compartment at the front. Last I recall, the capacity in the fuel tank was 7.2 litres. Some photos should be attatched.

The 2008 Kymco Super 8 has apparently been serviced recently and has a new battery, and is sitting at 2,600 k's. From the looks of it, the storage space is slightly less than the Fly (I don't think it has any storage below the dash as the Fly does). It doesn't look to have any real scratches. The fuel tank has a 6 l capacity, so it's slightly less than the Fly. The owner is asking $1,600 for it.

Pictures of both bikes will be included below.

Any feedback or tips any of you had would be very much appreciated.

I don't think you could wrong with any of those scoots provided they are in good mechanical condition. I do think that since you are interested in such a variety of scoots, pay particular attention in how it fits/feels to you. You won't appreciate the purchase if it becomes uncomfortable to you after owning for a while. Also, some scoots have much more storage than others - that may be important if you need to carry some items or extra gear.
How many scoots is too many?

Thanks for the reply.

Of course I intend to test out and ride any scooter I get before purchase. I have done so with the bug, but not any of the others at this stage.

At the beginning of my first post, I had a list of about four considerations that were important to me when buying, the main two however, in order of importance, are

- Resale value (not that I've anything against scooters, but I'm planning on jumping to a car when I'm able)

And

- Storage space. I'd be traveling at least to work everyday, and in my regular travels, I'm usually the person who takes more rather than less
